With all these limited food choices, what should the gout patient eat? Patients should consume plant derived omega 3 fatty acids or supplements of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexanoic acid rather than consuming fish. Patients should consume nuts and legumes to replace the red meat consumption. Patients should use vitamin C. Vitamin C is uricosuric, which is a fancy way of saying that the vitamin increases uric acid excretion in the urine. Daily intravenous infusion of 500mg of vitamin C for ten days significantly reduced the serum uric acid levels.

Diet counseling is important for prevention and monitoring of gout. Patients should reduce purine consumption by decreasing beer and meat intake. Avoid distilled spirits. However, wine, tea, soda, and coffee do not need to be eliminated from the diet.

If a patient has gout, diuretics, including diuretic therapy, and aspirin need to be avoided. They can trigger an attack just like the food and beverages previously discussed. Not only is hyperuricemia dangerous for developing gout but uric acid crystals can also result in kidney stones. Extraskeletal manifestations of gout, like kidney stones, will be discussed in a later section. All hyperuricemia risk factors need to be avoided.
